A Sand Red Letter Day at Redwall Abbey

·

Some LEGO colors whisper. Sand red strides through the gatehouse carrying a sword and a wheel of cheese. Evancelt’s Redwall Abbey turns this long-retired color into wonderfully weathered masonry, giving the entire fortress the warm, storybook character Brian Jacques’ woodland world deserves.

The sheer commitment to sand red is impressive. It is beautiful, scarce, and not exactly the color you choose when you enjoy casually ordering another hundred bricks. Here, its uneven availability becomes part of the texture. Subtle shifts across the walls make the abbey feel ancient and expanded over generations rather than freshly assembled for a convention table.

Then there is that brick-built background. Evancelt rotated the scenery 45 degrees, sending the studs and seams diagonally across the sky. That simple change of orientation produces clouds with playful, irregular edges instead of the usual staircase silhouette. It is a clever reminder that sometimes the best new LEGO shape comes from turning the old geometry sideways.

The composition works beautifully from front to back. The bridge over the river leads straight toward the gate, while towers and walls pull the eye upward to the angled sky. Tiny mice, moles, otters, and hares give the grand architecture a sense of scale—and make the abbey feel inhabited rather than merely imposing. Even the decorative flourishes, including that fancy letter R, help sell this as a place with history, pride, and probably an extremely well-stocked kitchen.

Evancelt has built Redwall several times, but this version feels like a dream finally realized: rare color, confident architecture, and a display technique that makes the clouds nearly as interesting as the abbey. Albuquerque Brick Convention visitors got quite the feast for the eyes. Deeper’n’Ever Turnip’n’Tater’n’Beetroot Pie presumably sold separately.
