Cathode Ray, Classic Space Day

·

Rubblemaker’s Inkgun Cathode is a chunky little blue-and-white brick of Neo Classic Space joy, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. This is ship 4 in the chibi fleet, but it has the attitude of a full-size patrol craft that got compressed in a very enthusiastic space garage.

The first thing that sells it is the silhouette: broad, rounded blue wings wrapped around a white center section, with those yellow-and-black striping hits doing instant Classic Space nostalgia work. The proportions are delightfully stubby without feeling lazy. Chibi ships can sometimes look like someone just lopped off the back half, but this one feels designed from nose to engine bells as a compact machine with its own personality.

I really like how the canopy sits low and forward, giving the orange-suited pilot that proper bubble-cockpit hero moment. The transparent yellow canopy is practically a cheat code for Classic Space charm, but Rubblemaker backs it up with smart surface shaping around it: clean plate seams, curved blue slopes, and just enough studded texture to keep it LEGO-ish instead of over-smoothed. The red lights sprinkled around the hull are tiny details, but they break up the color blocking beautifully.

Then there is the business end. The front-mounted twin cannons give the ship its “inkgun” bite, while the rear engine cluster is a wonderful little knot of cylinders, cones, and white greebly bits. It is busy without turning into visual soup, which is a surprisingly hard balance at this scale. You get the sense of vents, thrusters, and sci-fi machinery packed into a toy-sized footprint.

With one ship left in the fleet, Rubblemaker has built up a fun little language here: goofy names, squat proportions, classic colors, and enough technique to reward a good zoom-in. I am very ready for the hangar group shot.
