Rubblemaker’s R1-Mantaray is exactly the kind of sci-fi build that gets me grinning before I even start zooming in on the details. The silhouette does the heavy lifting right away. It really does feel like a manta ray translated into starfighter language, with broad, gliding wings and a body that looks fast even when parked. Animal-inspired spaceship design can sometimes feel a bit too literal, but this one threads the needle beautifully. It takes the spirit of the creature and turns it into something sleek, toyetic, and properly spacefaring.

What makes this especially fun is the constraint behind it. This was designed as an exclusive launch model for Brickwith, built entirely from that parts palette and kept within an approachable piece count. You can feel those limitations in the best possible way. Instead of sprawling complexity, the model leans on clear shaping, smart color blocking, and a silhouette that reads from across the room. That is harder than it looks. Making a compact ship feel distinctive without burying it in greebles takes discipline.
I also appreciate how well the build appears to balance display appeal with actual buildability. The curves seem intentional rather than fragile, and the overall form suggests a model that would be satisfying both to construct and to swoosh around the living room making your own engine noises. Yes, I absolutely judge starfighters on swooshability.
The animal-theme concept has a lot of mileage if this is the first entry in the line. If future ships are this clean and this characterful, I am very ready to see the rest of the space menagerie.
