This is the kind of Bio-Cup entry that makes me grin before I even start counting parts: a Bionicle titan reimagined as a gentle island fisherman with a leaf hat. Eero Okkonen’s My Neighbour Keetongu takes the big yellow legend of 2005 and quietly sends him wandering into Miyazaki territory, which is honestly where more ancient biomechanical beings should spend their afternoons.

The Gen1 Gauntlet constraint is doing a lot of work here in the best possible way. Eero limited himself to classic 2001-2010 Bionicle parts, which means no later CCBS shortcuts for smooth character shaping. That makes the softer, storybook feel of the build extra impressive. Keetongu still reads as Keetongu, but not as a straight set remake. He is younger, rounder, and friendlier, with the leaf hat covering for the tricky problem of finding the right head shell at this scale.
That hat is also the whole joke, of course. The title nods to My Neighbor Totoro, and once you see Keetongu under a big leafy cap, the tiny fishing scene snaps into place. The modified MNOG fish is a lovely bit of deep-cut Bionicle flavor, while the little Matoran companion with crabs adds just enough slice-of-life energy to make the scene feel lived in.
I love when a contest prompt becomes an excuse for nostalgia instead of a cage. This is G1 Bionicle memory filtered through Eero’s very particular character-building brain: odd, warm, clever, and packed with affection for the source material.
