LEGO introduced Darth Vader in its LEGO Star Wars line in 1999, making him one of the earliest minifigures. The character has appeared in over 100 sets, often as the main villain. His black helmet, cape, and red lightsaber define the design. LEGO Darth Vader minifigures vary by printing details, accessories, and molds, appealing to collectors and builders.
Several sets stand out for featuring Darth Vader prominently. The 75251 Darth Vader’s Castle, released in 2018, recreates Mustafar’s fortress with a throne room, lava trap, and Vader’s meditation chamber. It includes Darth Vader, a buildable Sith trooper, and two flame troopers. Another is the 75296 Sith Troopers Battle Pack from 2020, which has Vader’s meditation chamber with a sphere that “breathes” and deploys troopers. The 75183 LEGO Darth Vader Transformation set from 2017 shows Anakin’s cybernetic conversion, with a medical bay, wrecked ship parts, and Vader emerging from the pod. For action, the 75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader set (2022) stages a duel on a rocky planet with Vader, Obi-Wan, and a TIE Advanced. Older favorites include the 75294 Bespin Duel (2020), pitting Vader against Luke on Cloud City.
LEGO Darth Vader minifigures have evolved through 31 variants by 2024. The original 1999 version from set 7146 TIE Fighter Pilot set the standard with basic black torso printing and a simple helmet. It remains popular for nostalgia and affordability on the secondary market. The 2005 update in sets like 7257 LEGO Ultimate Lightsaber Duel added detailed chest panel printing and a fabric cape, improving realism. A fan favorite is the 2011 mold from 9493 Boba Fett’s Slave I, with a new LEGO helmet for better proportions and sharper face details. The 2017 chrome variant from 75183 LEGO Transformation, with metallic armor, stands out for display value but costs more. Recent ones, like the 2022 battle-damaged version from 75362 Jabba’s Sail Barge, include scarred printing under the helmet.
These LEGO sets and minifigures keep Darth Vader central to LEGO Star Wars. They mix play with collection, drawing fans of all ages.
