Eero Okkonen’s Umbra’s Endomothopter flutters right into that sweet spot between bug, bike, and space opera weirdness. It’s part of his Vembu project, a batch of small, speedy vehicles, and this one absolutely earns the “thopter” badge with its insectoid silhouette and lean, go-fast attitude.

What I love here is how Eero makes the craft feel organic without losing the hard sci-fi edge. The long body has that segmented creature vibe, while the wing assemblies suggest something built for twitchy, high-speed maneuvering rather than leisurely cruising. It’s less “parked starfighter” and more “please keep all limbs inside the vehicle before it darts through a canyon.”
The build is currently on display at Messukylä Library in Tampere until August 30th, which feels delightfully specific and very AFOL-core. Tiny fast vehicles in a library? That’s my kind of summer reading program.
