No Bley at the Cottage Door

·

BenRen1001 is back after a long building break, and if this is what “rust” looks like, I’ll take a whole toolbox of it. Cottage in the meadow is a bright little Summer Joust entry built for the no bley category, which means the usual medieval safety blanket of gray stone is nowhere to be found. Instead, we get a full scoop of storybook color: warm yellow walls, chocolate-brown timber framing, dark green shutters, and a red front door that practically demands a tiny basket of bread on the step.

No Bley at the Cottage Door

The smartest move here is that the cottage does not try to be “realistic” in the muddy medieval sense. It leans into fairytale logic. The yellow walls make the building glow, while the dark brown frame gives everything just enough structure to keep it from turning into candy. That red arched door is the bullseye, tucked neatly into the front wall with a satisfying little bit of SNOT work and a black handle that pops against all that warmth.

But the roof is the bit that really sells the build. The dark green slopes are scattered with small olive and tan elements like windblown leaves, moss, or maybe shingles that have been repaired by a woodland eccentric with excellent part bins. It breaks up the big roof plane beautifully without making it feel noisy. The little black chimney at the peak is simple, but it gives the whole cottage a proper hearth-and-soup energy.

I’m also fond of the base, which does a lot with very little. The black border frames it like a vignette, the uneven green plates suggest a soft clearing, and the rounded brown path feels worn in just enough to say somebody lives here. No knights charging through, no dragon in the rafters, just a charming cottage with enough color and craft to make the meadow feel magical.
