No Bley? No Problem—Let It Grow!

·

The Summer Joust’s “No bley” category bans grey, silver, dark bluish grey—all that dependable medieval mortar. T-86swebrickRLUG answers the challenge with a glorious riot of garden color. Two elven sisters tend their flowers beneath a blooming arch, and the whole vignette feels less like a contest entry and more like a tiny fantasy holiday you accidentally discovered between the hedges.

That flower-covered arch was inspired by Jonas Kramm’s Yellow Gazebo, and it became the seed for the entire scene. It is a smart bit of composition: the arch frames the sisters, gives the build height, and turns what could have been a plain boundary into a bouquet with architecture tucked inside it.

What I love most is how the restriction drives the subject instead of merely complicating it. When the usual neutral colors vanish, foliage, flowers, and warm earth tones have to carry structure, depth, and mood. The result pops without feeling random—a cheerful pocket of elven life where every color earns its place. No bley? No problem. Just add petals.
