Small Shunter, Big Charm: This Dark Green NS 200 ‘Sik’ Nails the Look

·

Some trains win you over with sheer size. This one does it with attitude. Ties_va’s LEGO take on the Dutch NS 200 “Sik” is a compact shunter with loads of character, and the smaller footprint only makes the craftsmanship more impressive.

The first thing that jumps out is the shaping on the hood. Instead of settling for a simple brick-built box, Ties gives the body subtle angles that make the locomotive feel much more like a real industrial engine. Up top, the curved cab roof softens the silhouette nicely, while the grille work and side vents add just enough texture to sell the machinery without cluttering the model.

The color work is doing a lot of heavy lifting too. Dark green over the black running gear already feels sharp, but the red buffer beams and tan handrails push it into proper railway eye candy. Those handrails are especially effective, breaking up the body with a clean line that also reads as functional detail. It’s the kind of restrained color blocking train fans appreciate because it looks intentional from every angle.

Look closer and there’s a lot of smart small-scale modeling packed in here: the buffers and coupler assembly, the side linkage and underframe detail, the lamps, and the little touches around the walkway all help the locomotive feel believable at 1:45 scale. According to the builder, the model is powered by Circuit Cubes, which makes the tidy packaging even more satisfying. Ties, a 24-year-old builder from the Netherlands who mostly works in this scale, clearly knows how to squeeze realism out of LEGO geometry.

If you’re into trains, this is one of those builds that rewards a second look. It’s clean, confident, and full of the kind of quiet technique that makes an everyday workhorse locomotive feel special.
