Steam, spokes, and a swing in its step

captain_j03’s Dampfwagen is the kind of tiny LEGO vehicle that makes me lean closer to the screen and mutter, “Oh, that’s neat,” in the totally normal way adults talk to plastic. At just 6-wide, this steam lorry packs in a surprising amount of mechanical character: spoked wheels, exposed chain drive, and a delightfully fussy steampunk silhouette that feels half workshop prototype, half toy shelf treasure.

The best bit for me is how much of the build’s personality comes from the revisions Martin mentions in the description. Turning the wheels around for the spoked look is such a simple move, but it instantly sells the vintage vibe. The chain drive is another tasty detail, especially with the swap to 12-tooth gears so the chain clears the ground. That’s the good stuff: not just looking cool, but solving a real little LEGO geometry problem along the way.

And then there’s the front swing axle. On a compact vehicle like this, a pendular axle adds a wonderfully believable bit of ruggedness, like this contraption might actually rattle across cobblestones powered by steam, stubbornness, and a questionable safety inspection. The exposed mechanics give it a toy-like honesty, which fits perfectly with captain_j03’s long-running daily toy project energy.

I also love the note about the missing number plate still being in his pocket. That is painfully relatable LEGO chaos. We’ve all built the clever mechanism, dialed in the proportions, photographed the thing, and only then discovered the one final detail hiding on the desk, in a bin, or apparently in our trousers.
