If you grew up watching Section 9’s blue spider-tanks scuttle across rooftops in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, this build is going to hit different. Auckland-based builder pyrefyre (Alvaro Gunawan) has dropped “Kabutokoma” — a compact, militarized riff on the beloved Tachikoma that fuses samurai helmet aesthetics with that signature crouching spider-tank silhouette.

With 756 builds in his Flickr portfolio, pyrefyre clearly knows his way around a parts bin — and it shows. The multi-axis SNOT work on the carapace is deceptively clean, with blue wedge plates and curved slopes creating compound curves that feel almost organic. Those black compound-eye sensors on top? Instantly recognizable to any SAC fan, and they give the little mech genuine personality. The real showstopper is that segmented white cylinder at the rear — a brilliant piece of parts-economy that nails the Tachikoma’s iconic rear pod while adding a ribbed, mechanical texture all its own.
The name says it all: “Kabuto” (the rhinoceros beetle, or the samurai helmet it inspired) plus “koma” from Tachikoma. It’s not a copy — it’s an evolution. Heavier, more armored, more aggressive. The kind of next-gen think-tank that would make Major Kusanagi raise an eyebrow.
