This Volvo Found Its Footing

Sam Andreas’ 1974 Volvo 242 coupe is the kind of 6-wide car that reminds you how much character can live inside a very small footprint. The real 242 is famously squared-off in that glorious old Volvo way, and that is exactly what makes it such a fun LEGO subject: every tiny shift in stance, wheel size, and ride height changes the whole personality.

The headline trick here is the tire swap. Sam replaced basic LEGO City wheels with a combo of part 92409 wrapped around 50945, which keeps the diameter close to a regular wheel while giving the tire a thinner, more period-correct profile. That sounds like a small adjustment until you realize how unforgiving 6-wide cars are. A tire that is a hair too chunky can make the whole thing look toy-like. Too thin, and it starts feeling underbuilt. This setup lands right in the sweet spot.

I especially like that Sam calls out the visible tread as part of the decision. That little bit of texture matters. Classic compact sedans and coupes live or die by their stance, and this Volvo gets that neat, practical, slightly stubborn look without losing the LEGO-ness of it. It is not trying to become a die-cast model. It is still brick-built, still charming, still wonderfully boxy.

There is also something very satisfying about a builder rethinking a preference mid-build. Sam says he used to dislike thin tires on 6-wide cars, but these made him reconsider. That is the good stuff: not just finding the right part, but finding the right reason for the part. For a tiny Swedish brick on wheels, this thing has excellent footwear.
