There’s something wonderfully timeless about an old west train chugging through a big community layout, and DecoJim’s contribution to the MichLUG display at the 2026 Michigan State Fair hits that dusty frontier sweet spot. The locomotive and cars feel right at home among the larger train setup, bringing a little six-shooter-era charm to the rails without needing to shout for attention.
I’m especially drawn to the way a build like this works as part of a bigger collaborative scene. A train layout lives or dies on motion, rhythm, and those little pockets of character you spot as the cars roll by. This one has that display-table magic: the kind of model that makes you lean in, follow the track, and immediately wonder what else is around the bend.
MichLUG always brings the good stuff, and a western train is a mighty fine way to keep the layout from going off the rails. Sorry. Had to.
